About Callaway Gardens

Callaway Gardens, a man-made landscape in a unique natural setting, was conceived and created by Cason J. Callaway and his wife, Virginia Hand Callaway,
Cason and Virginia Callaway longed for a place where man and nature could abide together for the good of both. Here is the story of their marriage, their families and the retreat they established in the southernmost foothills of the Appalachian Mountains.
The Education Department, the scientific and educational outreach arm of Callaway Gardens, strives to help visitors gain a better understanding of the living world through workshops, lectures, tours, hikes and much more.
Callaway Gardens is home to an expansive, sustainably managed preserve that is under conservation easement and is used for biological studies and environmental education programs.
