Red Tailed Hawk

The name of this raptor is rather deceiving because its tail color varies from solid red in adults to banded brown and gray in immature hawks. This is the most abundant bird of prey in North America.

The red tailed hawk feeds on most animals that are smaller than it. This includes rabbits, rats, squirrels and snakes. Red tailed hawks live in woods with nearby open land and also on plains and deserts. They enjoy being carried by columns of air and can be seen gliding effortlessly overhead.
