We can all learn something new every time we pick up a needle, and we welcome the opportunity to explore pattern, texture and line in stitching. Many people find it difficult to integrate and blend stitches into a background and this will also be addressed in the course. Join us in a total celebration of stitched surfaces. Shipping costs to bring supplies and visuals from the UK are built into the kit cost. Kit includes: A variety of fabrics, threads, other materials and supplies to be used in class and technique/sketchbook. Student to bring: The instructors’ letters to the students will detail more supply requirements. | Class 101 Michael Boren Frankie Class length: Four days
Proficiency level: Intermediate – Advanced Intermediate
Kit fee: $125.00
Ground fabric: 18-ct. mono eggshell canvas
Size: Working canvas (8”x 11”) Finished size (12”x 15”) |
Frankie is a four-day intermediate to advanced intermediate level counted canvas class with a minimal amount of pre-stitching (backstitching the outer and inner edges of the border). This design is the instructor’s interpretation of a Frank Lloyd Wright-style stained glass window, featuring a variety of Jean Hilton-created stitches.
Stitches used in the design include: backstitch, a plaited couching pattern, Smyrna, wheat sheaf, walnetto, various Jessicas, Amadeus, waffles, double fan, double fan doubled, eight point star, Chilly Hollow and patterned couching. The use of the #12 perle cotton gives the overall design a light, open look. Care must be taken not to drag threads across open areas, which would mar the overall appearance of the design.
Students will be given the choice of four colorway options: ‘Monet’ (the original), ‘Mardi Gras,’ ‘Jewel’ or ‘Pastel.’ All of the colorways have the black, ecru and metallic threads in common.
The instructor strongly recommends Evertite™ adjustable stretcher bars for this class, which may be purchased directly from him at an additional cost. Students who do not use adjustable stretcher bars can expect to have to restretch the canvas at least once a day during the four-day class period.
Kit includes: 18-ct. mono canvas, Finca Prescencia perle cotton and cotton floss, Rainbow Gallery silk lame braid, Kreinik ribbon and braid, Sundance beads, shipping costs for mailing of pre-stitching, instruction booklet and color photocopy. Student to bring: A variety of tapestry and beading needles; laying tool; frame weight, stand or other means to allow two-handed stitching and usual stitching supplies. Optional: lighting and magnification. Pre-work: Minimal amount – backstitching the outer and inner edges of the border. | Class 102 Carole H. Lake Father Frost Class length: Four days

You will also learn how to use optical mixing to add interest to a monochromatic design as you layer threads to make complex composite patterns. His twinkling eyes will enchant you as you stitch crystalline patterns on his cloak! Father Frost is a counted design worked on 18 ct. blue mono canvas. He is designed to be finished as a stand-up figure, but student may choose to add background and frame. Echoes of Elizabeth is a sampler of techniques and design elements from Elizabethan embroidery notably Tudor roses, the use of pearls (a favorite jewel of Elizabeth), Reticella and the blackwork patterns. While the sampler harks back to an earlier time, it is not an historical representation. It just draws its inspiration from the period. Merry Cox Petite Treasures
Class length: Two days
Proficiency level: Intermediate
Kit fee: $195.00
Ground fabric: 32-count linen
Size: 7”x 9” |
Several years ago, while antiquing, Merry found a child’s or miniature cutlery tray from about the turn-of-the-century, late 1800’s. She handed this wonderful petite tray over to the extraordinarily talented carpenter, who makes Merry’s wooden thread holders, thread winders, pincushion box and the lovely diminutive carrier. He has reproduced the tray exclusively for her to the exact precision of the original. Merry chose walnut for the wood, and this little tray is indeed a treasure to be filled with more treasures. The petite tray itself measures approximately 4”x 3”. Included in this special set is a needlebook, a pinkeep, a scissors holder, a silk button/thimble bag and a mini walnut ruler with a stitched decorative fob. When all the accessories are placed in the tray, which is lined on the bottom, it can then be slipped inside the beautiful silk bag with decorative stitched pulls. Stitches used in this project are feather stitch, half buttonhole wheel, cross stitch ‘over one’, Smyrna cross stitch and nun stitch. Kit includes: A 7”x 9” piece of 32-ct. linen, all silk threads, vintage buttons, vintage pins, silk fabric and beads necessary to complete the project. Also included are the walnut tray, the walnut mini ruler, instruction booklet and color photocopy. Student to bring: Either stretcher bars or a hoop, usual stitching supplies, light and/or magnifier, if needed.

Caela Conn Tyler Polar Shadows
Class length: Two days
Proficiency level: Intermediate
Kit fee: $85.00
Ground fabric: 24-ct. pale gray Congress cloth
Size: 12”x 16” |
Polar Shadows, a frosty Norwegian scene, will present students with opportunities to experience several approaches to canvaswork. Worked on pale gray 24-ct. Congress cloth, muted and/or pastel hues of hand-dyed threads create innumerable color variations, while varied techniques offer textural contrasts. The structures (buildings and bridge) use traditional canvaswork stitches, solidly covering the canvas ground, with the exception of the tree areas described below. Embroidery stitches depict railings and tree trunks/branches. The emphatic large foreground tree trunks become realistic with packed outline stitches, reinforcing the importance of this focal area. As the landscape features recede from foreground to background, the stitch treatments likewise change with the background hills being stitched with composite exposed canvas patterns, stitched with single strands of thread. The sky is very minimally stitched, merely hinting at Money’s subtle coloration. The trees present unique layering. When participants stitch the structures and snow cover, the thread hues and stitch patterns will remain constant, but in tree areas, thread usage is reduced to a single strand. A layer of gray pale blue silk organza and mauve tulle shapes is then basted onto the canvas. Finally, mall exposed canvas stitches, using a single strand of embroidery floss or Accentuate fine metallic, stitched through all layers, complete the illusion of tree foliage. The large focal trees carry this layering technique a glittery step further. The “foliage” foundation consists of a filmy layer of tulle. A network of variably sized criss-crossing straight stitches, each threaded with an iridescent mauve bead, tops off the foliage area. Contrasting textures, subtle interacting hues and varied stitch techniques, along with touches of glitz and glitter combine to truly entire the student while remaining well within the realm of the intermediate proficiency level. Kit includes: 24-ct. Congress cloth, tulle, silk organza, all threads and beads needed to complete the project, needles, a complete instruction booklet and color photocopy. Student to bring: 12”x 16” stretcher bars, purple air-disappearing ink pen, medium color (not red) sewing thread, usual stitching supplies and light and/or magnification, if needed. | Class 115 Joyce Lukomski Studio Time

Lynn Payette Moths Are Pretty, Too! Class length: Two days
Proficiency level: Intermediate
Kit fee: $80.00
Ground fabric: Congress cloth
Size: 4 ¾” x 6” |
This piece gives students an opportunity to create a piece with a removable ‘moth’ pin or pendant to wear. The Congress cloth ground of the piece is layered (by bonding) with sheer and opaque fabrics in shapes that simulate the swirling flight of the moth. The color and fabric choices are the student’s decisions. These are then lightly overstitched with metallic and rayon machine embroidery threads and are then surrounded with metallic threads in various sizes and types. Stitches taught include open and whipped open fly, chain stitch, outline and whipped outline stitch, squared filling, couching, random pattern darning (this is done through the sheers only, so the ground fabric will show through), raised chain and raised outline stitch. The moth is created separately on a Congress cloth ground, (on stretcher bars). The moth motif is covered with a layer of silk Dupioni fabric bonded to the ground fabric. This has had areas cut out before mounting. These cut-out areas are for stitching and beading techniques, a variety of which will be taught, and the students may choose any they desire. The non-cutout areas of the moth’s body are also overstitched in a variety of stitches, threads and metallics. The moth’s body is worked in a combination of turkey work (a bit shaggy!) and beading, using flosses and a variety of different types of bugle and seed beads. Students may wish to give him ‘beady’ eyes, which will be stitched on after the body is completed. After the stitching is completed, the pin/pendant is finished, bonding a piece of iridescent mother-of-pearl organza to the back. At this point, the excess Congress cloth is cut away, and the moth is then edged with a wire, wrapped with Soft Sheen Fyre Werks, which is both glued and stitched on. This will give the moth wings flexibility so that they can be formed in any position the student wishes. The pin back or pendant loop is then stitched on, and the antennae are attached. The antennae are created with wire covered either in beads or a metallic thread. The students will be given instructions for both options. This piece gives students choices for their own beads, stitches, colors and placement of threads and fabrics. It is a unique opportunity for studenst to try something different and to create not only a lovely finished picture but a useful piece of jewelry, as well. Kit includes: Color copy and instructions, beads, a variety of threads and metallics, wire, silk Dupioni fabric, pre-drawn Congress cloth pieces, Wonder Under, sheer and opaque fabrics, a pin back or loop. Student to bring: Stretcher bars 10”x 10”, a variety of needles, including a beading needle, a pencil, small sharp scissors, glue stuck, beeswax, invisible thread, wire cutters and a few common pins.

Constructing the elements of the necklace, students will stitch a twisted tubular herringbone base necklace ending in a “flair” of herringbone stitch. The slide tube employs tubular peyote done with a patterned stripe. Stitched peyote “Russian” leaves dot the Dumorite donut along with various fringes. Students will apply basic wirework techniques to give a personal finish to the piece. All gold elements are 14K gold or more, and the necklace length can be adjusted to a pre-calculated length with a simple formula before the stitching is completed. These are chosen in warm colors from families of sage, rose, burgundy, key lime, teal, periwinkle and Flemish blue. A garden, a pattern worked over French lace and the choice of stitching your very own initials in one of the areas (see the four intertwined M’s) makes this design uniquely your own. These patterns are surrounded with golden care. It’s math – it’s geometry – but most of all, it’s fun! The further bonus will be discussion during class about the history and meaning of BLUE. Kit includes: Marked canvas, all threads and materials needed to complete the project, complete set of instructions and color photocopy. Student to bring: Stretcher bars 13”x 13”, tape/tacks to attach the canvas, tapestry needles #18 through #24, embroidery needles #8, usual stitching supplies and light/magnifier, if needed. | Class 206

Elizabeth I, A Portrait is a shared class taught by two teachers, Carole H. Lake and Gay Ann Rogers. Adapted from a painting contemporary to Elizabeth I, the needlepoint portrait shows the textures of silk, metallic braid and beads with an abundance of the pearls that were Elizabeth’s trademark. Stitching a portrait in needlework poses certain problems that stitching a flat piece, say a jacket front, does not. Gay Ann’s role in class will be helping people stitch the portrait and understand some of the problems the design posed. The portrait itself is only a part of the story; there is the queen herself, as opulent and lavish a person as the Western world has known. Her story, in a broad sweeping sense of her impact on the emergence of a nation, is great, but equally interesting is the person herself. Carole’s role in class will be a series of slides and lectures on the history surrounding the queen. In class, people will work on the portrait and enjoy the history lessons while they stitch. Kit includes: Complete kit includes white Congress cloth, all threads and materials needed to complete the project, small pearls, instruction booklet and color photocopy. Partial kit includes instruction booklet and beads with pearlized seed beads, replacing the real pearls of the full kit. Student to bring: Stretcher bars, usual stitching supplies, light and/or magnifier, if needed. | Class 207 Judy Souliotis Japanese Embroidery: Independent Study

Proficiency level: Intermediate
Kit fee: $180.00
Ground fabric: 32-count linen cut 6.5”x 28” and 9.5”x 6.5” |
This project was inspired by an antique French lithograph bonbon box from the 1890’s. Since chocolate was a very expensive luxury, presentation was very important. Because of its beauty, the bonbon box would be cherished and saved to be used for other purposes such as a sewing box.
In addition to making this lovely sewing box, stitched on all four sides, students will make a beautiful silk lined sewing case which is housed inside the box.
The bonbon box has very unique construction including covering the wood base with decorative paper, which also lines the box. The sewing case has a needlebook and mattress-type pincushion attached to one side, while the other side has a place for scissors and a pencil. A scrimshaw ‘aide memoire’ has a special place in the spine area of the case. Case measures 3” x 3 ½” when closed.
All supplies for stitching and finishing are included in this kit except for the scissors. Stitches used in this project are tent stitch ‘over one’, rococo stitch, stem stitch and split stitch. Kit includes: 32-count linen, silk threads, scrimshaw ‘aide memoire’, buttons, silk fabric, ribbon, instruction booklet and color photocopy. Student to bring: Stretcher bars or hoop, usual stitching supplies, light and/or magnifier, if needed. | | | Class 212 Tony Minieri Tony Redux
Class length: Two days or four days
Proficiency level: All
Kit fee: You’ve already paid for it
Design size: Whatever you’re stitching |
How many times have you taken a class with Tony and when you get back to actually stitching the piece, you say to yourself, “If I could only have another day or two with him on this design”. This is your chance for exactly that. This is a studio time class for any Tony pieces that you have questions for or need help with. You may bring as many of his designs with you as you choose, either projects or painted canvases with his stitch and thread guides. There will be intermittent discussions of technique and some interesting exercises. Student to bring: Tony is requesting that you bring your projects that you wish to work on, a 10” x 10” piece of #18 canvas, stretcher bars to fit, #5 and #8 Pearl cotton ( any color), some graph paper, a ruler and pencils. | Class 213 Lynn Payette Little Quail Class length: Two days
Proficiency level: Intermediate
Kit fee: $86.00
Ground fabric: White soft Congress cloth
Size: 6” circle | |
‘Little Quail’ is a non-charted design, created with the use of sheer and opaque fabrics, silk ombre ribbons, metallic threads, floss and stumpwork techniques. Students will make decisions for the placement of stitches and colors of the leaves. Techniques will be demonstrated for the stitching and application of sheer and opaque fabrics (using a bonding technique with a product called Wonder Under, a fusible web). Some of the leaves will be superimposed on the ground fabric after being wired (between two layers of bonded fabric) and will curve out from the piece in the student’s choice of placement. Some of the leaves will be bonded directly to the ground and then overstitched. This will give a 3-D effect around and partially over the quail, and the leaves bonded to the ground fabric. Also taught will be the overstitching of fabrics with threads, working with novelty and metallic threads and creating a color scheme that demonstrates cast shadows and perspective. The wheat is created with pearl cotton and metallic threads in whipped back and straight stitches. The quail’s body and head will be stitched separately on muslin and then applied to the ground fabric with padding created with one or two layers of felt. Long and short stitch will be worked on the upper breast of the quail, and buttonhole stitch for the lower breast. The quail’s head is worked in a variety of stitches, including satin stitch, outline stitch and whipped outline stitch, chain stitch, French knots and beading. This piece allows the student to experience the use of a wide variety of media and will have a heavy emphasis on creating perspective and shadows with the use of threads, metallics, beads and fabrics. The student will also learn to recreate an object (quail), using stitches to create photographic realism. ‘Little Quail’ is the first piece in bird theme series. Kit includes: Pre-drawn Congress cloth, fabrics – sheer & opaque, all threads and fibers necessary to complete the piece, including floss, metallic threads, metallic sewing machine threads, novelty yarns and threads, beads, wire, felt, a complete set of instructions and a color photocopy. Student to bring: 12”x 12” stretcher bars, tacks or staples to mount the piece, small, very sharp scissors, paper-cutting scissors, crewel needles #5, #6 or #7, chenille needles #18 and #22, a beading needle, glue stick (not the blue or purple type), invisible thread, beeswax, sharpened pencil, light and/or magnifier, if needed. Optional: wire cutters, a few common pins, extra small bags for separating threads and fabrics and a “C” clamp or other method of attaching the working frame to the table. | Class 214 Debbie Stiehler Crazy for Stitching
