Ever wish for uninterrupted time to work and for someone to do the cooking?  This is the ideal situation!  Bundle up your plans and materials and spend time working to your heart’s content.  Under Pam’s guidance, work through your concepts and stitch your original work.  You will be asked to send Pam your objectives for the session, a working “wish list” of what you would like to accomplish.  Bring along a journal for exploring new ideas and recording your progress through the creative process.  Guaranteed to re-charge your batteries and set yourself on the road to accomplishment!

The photo shown here is the work of Caren Scarborough, an artist/student.

Student to bring:  All the tools and materials required for the project planned.

Class 102

CLASS 102

PAINTED CANVAS WORKSHOP: A GALLERY OF IDEAS FOR STITCHES AND THREADS
Class length:  Four days
Proficiency Level:  All levels.  Must know basketweave and be able to read stitch diagrams.
Kit Fee:  $25
Ground fabric:  Student’s choice
Size:  Student’s choice

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to take one painted canvas out of your stash and move it from impossible to possible during this class.  Learn about threads and their uses, and choose threads that will enhance your canvas.  Learn about stitches and how to manipulate them, and collect a gallery of ideas for your canvas with direction from Carole.  At the end of the class, you will have selected your threads and will have started a unique stitch guide.  All you will need to add is time to finish a wonderful piece!  Get it out of the closet and onto the wall!

This class is for canvas workers who love stitching on hand-painted canvases, but who want some advice when choosing threads and stitches.  Since Carole will be working with each canvas individually, students of all experience levels will benefit from this class.

This is not a class where Carole will write a stitch guide for you, either in advance of the class or during the class.  Even better, this is a class that will teach you to pick stitches and threads confidently for all those painted canvases in your stash.  You will get zillions of ideas for the creative use of threads and stitches for embellishment for ALL your canvases.

Kit includes:  An extensive class book, including thread information, hundreds of stitch possibilities and stitch guide charts.

Student to bring:  One hand-painted canvas, mounted on stretcher bars.  (No line-drawn or stamped canvases, please.)  Threads from home stash.  More threads may be purchased during field trips to the Boutique. Carole prefers that you not go out and buy threads just for class, but rather come to class with what you already have and work from there!  Table clamp, frame holder or frame weight. Light and/or magnification, if needed.  Needles, laying tool, scissors and usual stitching supplies.   Optional:  stitch books.

Class 103 and 202

CLASS 103
Dorothy Lesher

THE DRAGON MASTER

Class length:  Four days
Proficiency Level:  Advanced
Kit fee:  $180.00
Ground fabric:  Black Congress cloth
Size:  15”x 13”

The Dragon meets his Master in the Wizard.  Angry and resistant, the Dragon vents his rage at the Wizard’s all powerful magic.

The Dragon shimmers in all gold with accents of black and red silk and metallics.  His body is stitched in a fine black/gold cord.  The wing is worked in a variety of patches, using creative stitches and couched patterns.  The Wizard is robed in ‘quilted’ gold silk and velvet trimmed with gold cording.  Pattern stitches in red silk and fine gold decorate his long scarf.  An undergown of a fine gold networked pattern, filled with a rich purple and touches of red silk, complete the design.

The design is worked on black Congress cloth to enhance the dramatic look of the figures.  All stitching of black on black is done with black silk with the exception of the robe facing, which is done in velvet.  The fine black cord used in the body of the Dragon is actually one ply of a six-ply cord, used in the spine of the Dragon.  Each student will learn to separate the ply successfully to be used for the body stitching.

Kit includes:  All materials needed to complete the project, instruction booklet and color photocopy.

Student to bring:  Usual stitching tools, supplies and materials, appropriate stretcher bars or roller frame, a supply of various needles and  light and/or magnification, if needed.

Class F8

CLASS 104
Betty Chen Louis
DESIGN STUDIO

Class length:  Four days
Proficiency level:  All
Kit fee:  $26.00
Ground fabric:  Student’s choice
Size:  12”x 12” or larger

In many design and color classes, students learn the principles of design and color but do not have the opportunity to apply these principles to a piece of needlework.  Design Studio is a practical application class, in which each student who wishes will work on an original piece from its inception through the stages of planning threads and stitches.  Students are welcome to bring their own line drawings or use Betty’s pieces for inspiration.

In class, Betty will review the principles of color and design as they apply to each student’s work.  She will help refine line and color choices, as well as stitch and thread choices.

The class is open to anyone interested in expanding the horizons of his/her needlework.  It is also open to students who wish to work on an earlier piece of Betty’s but would like to hear the discussion and observe the creative processes at work.

Student to bring:  Tracing paper, drawing pencil, eraser, paper cement, paper scissors, L-shaped frame croppers, 12”x 12” Congress cloth (24-count) on stretcher bars, a selection of threads for experimentation, if needed; all usual stitching tools, Teko-bari, supplies and materials, including light and/or magnifier, if needed.  Students may also bring any previous BCL workshop piece.

Class 105

CLASS 105
Marnie Ritter
IN THE MOOD – RED
Class length:  Four days
Proficiency level:  Intermediate advanced
Kit fee:  $85.00
Ground fabric:  18-count Victorian red mono canvas
Size:  12”x 12”

Fifteen composite canvas patterns with an important message – open, open, open!

This new series exemplifies the importance of color choice and open canvas.  Canvas color choice first, then thread colors, then patterns that have an open concept that allow these first two choices to show off.  You can’t stop looking at this, can you?!!

Texture is the next addition, created by the choice of thirteen overdyed silks, Impressions, varied metallics, silks, perlee, ribbons and numerous beads, chosen in gentle colors from families of shell, pear, wisteria, parchment and slate.

The final touch is the delicate Oriental garden that resides inside the pagoda.  These patterns are surrounded with golden care.  It’s math – it’s geometry; but most of all, it’s fun!

A further bonus will be discussion during class about the history and meaning of RED!

Kit includes:  Marked canvas, instructions and all threads and materials needed to stitch the design.

Student to bring:  Stretcher bars (14”x 14), tape/tacks to attach canvas, tapestry needles #18 thru 24, embroidery needles #8, usual stitching tools and supplies and light/magnification, if needed.

Class 108

CLASS 108
Caela Conn Tyler
THE RED KERCHIEF

Class length:  Four days
Proficiency level:  Intermediate
Kit fee:  $80.00
Ground fabric:  18-count gray canvas AND 24-count Congress cloth
Size: 7" x 9.5"

In most cases, any reference to Monet’s masterpieces conjures up mental images of shimmering pastel colors.  The Red Kerchief contradicts this with its dramatic use of dark neutrals paired with stark white.  In his painting, Monet created a pervasive mood of mystery punctuated by a compelling focal point, Madame Monet’s bright red kerchief, that draws the viewer’s attention to the depths of the painting.  This stitched version of The Red Kerchief likewise pulls the viewer into the piece through its use of two canvases, separated by spacers when framed.

The background 24-count Congress cloth depicts the outdoors in wintertime.  Monet’s murky gray and green backgrounds will be replicated by the instructor’s acrylic pounced coloration of the canvas.  Students will use open canvas stitches in these areas to create interaction between the colored ground and hand-dyed cotton threads.  The sparkling snow offers significant contrast.  Students will make rather sheer polyester fabric with Angelina (fine polyester strands resembling Angel Hair).  The Angelina fabric, basted to the ground fabric, peeks out between the combined embroidery floss and Accentuate open stitches.  Madame Monet’s finely shaded delicate fact glances at the viewer.  She has bundled up for the cold winter day in a warm Burmilana coat, edged with shirred Rachel fur.  Her bright red kerchief glows in smooth stranded Silk Serica.

Muted hues of hand-dyed cottons and silk/wool, along with embroidery floss, portray the home’s interior.  The emphasis of the foreground 18-count gray mono canvas lies in the perspective of the recessed French doors.  Monet’s slightly offset treatment of the scene offers students the opportunity to explore ways of manipulating stitches to achieve such perspective or asymmetrical linearity.  The French doors’ windowpane areas are open.  Here, the canvas is cut, stark emptiness and further frame Madame Monet.

The Red Kerchief offers students new techniques, some different twists on more familiar stitching procedures and the opportunity to create an arresting piece of needleart.

Kit includes:  All threads and materials to complete the project, instruction booklet and color photo.

Student to bring:  Usual stitching tools and supplies, light and/or magnification, if needed.

Class 109

CLASS 109

JOURNEY TO SATCHIDANANDA
Class length:  Four days
Proficiency level:  Advanced
Kit fee: $210.00
Ground fabric:  24-ct. Congress cloth
Size: 9”x 12”

This collage of Indian sari fabrics is the second in a series of textile studies. This design can stand on its own, however. The beauty and diversity of sari fabrics make the textiles perfect for canvas interpretation.  Interpreting the fabrics allowed for an exploration of flat patterns, composite patterns, sheer fabric application, bead application, English Goldwork, trellis patterns, couching patterns and an interesting Plaited Crescent pattern. The threads used include Needlepoint Inc. Silk, Soie d’Alger, Soie Perlee, Splendor silk, metallic braids, silk sewing thread, fine metallic cords and also gold bullion, Swarovski lochrosen and seed beads. There are three colorways to choose from; Royal (jewel tones of fuchsia, purple, teal and acid green with gold), Buddha (salmon, saffron, turquoise and orchid with silver) and Northern (red, red/orange, apricot and electric blue with gold).

Kit includes:  24-ct. Congress cloth, all threads and materials to complete the project, instruction booklet and color photocopy.

Student to bring:  13” x 16” stretcher bars, regular stitching supplies, frame weight or other means to free both hands for stitching, light and/or magnification, if needed,  and an open mind.

HUMMINGBIRD PINCASE

Class length:  Two days
Proficiency level:  Basic intermediate
Kit fee:  $140.00
Ground fabric:  34-count Legacy Linen Café Au Lait
Size:  Finished size of design area:  7”x 4.5”

A summer garden is irresistible to the amazing ruby-throated hummingbird.  The tiny creature darts from blossom to blossom, feeding on the colorful flowers.  Adding interest are a variety of insects, hiding in the foliage.  Framing this lovely scene is a floral border counted over one.  This floral border is repeated on the inside and back covers.  The back of the case has an area that is perfect for initials.  The interior of the case is finished with a padded raised area that will hold the pins.

Class time will concentrate on creating the hummingbird.  Emphasis will be placed on padding, silk shading, the use of smooth and check purl, finishing techniques and the slips used for the flower petals and bird wing.

Here is a beautiful case that will keep your favorite counting pins handy or protect your favorite lapel pins!

Kit includes:  Soie d’Alger, Soie Perlee, Soie 100/3, overdyed cotton and silk, linen thread, metallic threads, hoop, muslin, felt, 34-ct. linen, needles, all finishing materials, glass beads, gold spangles, check and smooth purl, Swarovski Austrian crystal, detailed instructions and pictures and counting pin.

MOROCCAN TILE
Class length:  Two days
Proficiency level:  Intermediate
Kit fee:  $75.00
Ground fabric: 18-count sand canvas
Size:  5”x 5”

Moroccan Tile is reminiscent of the beautiful tiles, architecture and artwork found in Morocco.  The colors are traditional, but the piece is created with a ‘bit of a twist,’ using a large variety of techniques, stitches fibers, fabrics, gilded paper and beads.

Metallic lamé fabrics and other metallic fabrics, backed with Wonder Under (a fusible interfacing), will be cut into small pieces in a variety of shapes (squares, circles, triangles and freeform shapes) and will be bonded to the ground fabric in the squares of the piece.  Color choices, shapes and positioning will be the student’s choice.  The squares will then be surrounded and over-embellished with metallic threads, novelty threads and a large variety of types of beads, including seeds, crystals, twisted, delica and novelty beads.

Stitches taught will include:  back stitch, couching and a variety of beading stitches and techniques, including single stitch, back stitch, couching, dangles and application of novelty beads.

The center of the piece will be covered by a piece of gilded watercolor paper.  The student will be taught how to ‘tear’ the edges of the paper, after wetting it, to achieve a soft edge.  Once the center paper has been secured to the canvas ground with stitches, the student will further embellish the paper.  Gilding pens will also be available for the student’s use in class, if he/she wishes to gild the fabrics.  The motif will then be overstitched with threads, fibers, fabrics and beads.  It will be the student’s decision as to the placement of the colors, beads and stitches on the piece.

This piece fits nicely in a Sudberry square box or could be framed.

Kit includes:  Pre-drawn sand 18-count canvas; all fibers, threads fabrics and beads necessary to complete the piece; a beading cloth; Nymo beading thread; gilded watercolor paper; complete instructions and a color photocopy.

Student to bring:  (4) 10”x 10” stretcher bars and tacks to mount the canvas; small sharp scissors; paper scissors; needles (#7 or #8 crewel, #18 and #22 chenille, #22 tapestry, and beading); water soluble marker; pencil; small plastic bags for bits; invisible thread; beeswax; gluestick (not the ‘blue’ glue type); and tweezers.

Ground fabric:  Student’s choice
Size:  Margaret Rose herself is 7.5”x 9” on Congress cloth 12”x 14”
The sewing case is 3.25”x 4.5”

Take down the sewing case and use it.  Then replace it on the picture when you are finished!

Both Margaret Rose and her Sewing Case are inspired by the redwork patterns of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, so both are like a sketch of a figure embellished with traditional repeating patterns of double-running stitch.  In class students may work on either or both projects.  The instructor will cover the patterns and how to finish the sewing case.

Pre-work:  Complete instructions will be mailed to each student in early December.  Completing pre-class work before class actually begins is optional.

Kit includes:  Instructions only and a supply list.

Student to bring:  Silk or cotton floss to stitch the project in student’s color choice, 24-28 counted ground fabric of choice, usual stitching tools and supplies, light and/or magnification, if needed.

Proficiency level:  Basic intermediate
Kit fee:  $81.00
Ground fabric:  Soft Congress cloth – white
Size:  5.25”x 8.5”

Beautiful Birches, a non-charted design, contains unique techniques for working stitches, as well as the application of sheet and opaque fabrics to the Congress cloth to create the ground areas.  The layering of  sheers to create depth and perspective, working with dowels, paper and manipulated photographs of birch trees, as well as working with perspective, will all be covered.

Much emphasis will be placed on creating a light source and cast shadows, as well as on creating depth and perspective in a landscape.  This will give the illusion of the background trees fading behind the foreground and mid-ground trees.  Silk ribbons in varying sizes are used to create the leaves.  The foreground leaves will be very detailed, while the mid and back leaves will not.  The ground is created using the sheer and opaque fabrics, which are applied with Wonder Under, a fusible web.  The hillock sections are then trimmed and embellished with the novelty fibers and threads to give the appearance of grasses and weeds.

Beautiful Birches contains unique and unusual techniques and gives the student opportunities for placement of stitches, colors and media and to learn about creating a light source, depth and perspective in a landscape.

Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There, written in 1871, is a work of children’s literature by Lewis Carroll and is generally categorized as literary nonsense.*  In this notebook-type class, students are going to look through the judge’s glass to see what can be found by reviewing pieces that might be entered in an exhibit: what category, technique, color, design, finishing and the impact they have on the process.  There will also be discussion on the value of the artist’s statement and the judge’s critique.  By the end of the session, it is hoped the class will have dispelled any ‘literary nonsense’ about the process of judging.

COLOR AND DESIGN PLAY
Class length:  Four days
Proficiency level:  All
Kit fee:  $65.00

Color and Design Play is just that!  Instead of the standard color wheel, we’ll create a “still life” color wheel and value illustrations.  These will be part of an accordion-fold book, your own personal ‘art’ piece, as well as a standing and readily visible reference guide when planning your own designs.

With lots of guidance and illustrations, we’ll work from a photograph (flower photo provided, or you may bring any photo of your choice, flower or otherwise) to develop at least a half dozen different design approaches for the same subject, from literal interpretations to paper collage to ‘far out’ abstractions . . . whatever the colors, shapes and values of the original photo say to you and in whatever media you prefer to work.  It is amazing to discover the endless idea possibilities that spring forth from simply making a slight change in color, value, size or viewpoint.  A single idea can inspire a series of linked interpretations . . . an exciting and satisfying result!

From the original photograph (or the portion used for design), we’ll create several stitched miniatures.  Small is good because small is ‘finishable!’  these miniatures can be made into a different style of accordion-fold book, which can be displayed as a closed book or also unfolded into a standing display.

We’ll discuss myriad quick and simple ways to experiment with design possibilities and consider a variety of materials, techniques, stitches and display methods.  There is no end to the excitement and variety that can be discovered from just one source.  And there is no end to the learning that can be derived, no matter how many times one ‘plays’ with these processes.  Best of all, there is incalculable satisfaction in creating original works!

Kit includes:  All materials to constructor both Color/Design book and accordion miniature book, instruction booklet and color photocopy.

Student to bring:  Usual needlework tools, a small hoop or frame (no larger tan 6”), paper scissors, colored pencils, a selection of DMC threads, photos (if you like), and an assortment of general supplies that most everyone has at hand.

PIAZZA SAN MARCO
Class length:  Four days
Proficiency level:  Intermediate-Advanced Intermediate
Kit fee:  $80.00
Ground fabric:  24-ct. Congress cloth
Design size:  7”x 10”

In this class, a stitched interpretation of an impressionist masterpiece, students will blend both hues and thread types (hand-dyed cottons and fine metallics) and create color interaction between the hue of a thread and the stenciled/acrylic pounced background color of the 24 ct Congress cloth. The teaching emphasis will center upon contrasts in canvas coverage. Basilica San Marco uses more solid canvas coverage, while the sky and piazza contain open canvas stitches all using a single strand of thread. The color-treated canvas will become an important aspect of the sky, as students magnify the thread-color interaction through the selected thread color and the placement of the stitches. Further hue interaction occurs through using tulle underlays.

Piazza San Marco will offer students the opportunity to explore some critical principles of design – emphasis and space – through stitch selection, stitch manipulation, and contrasts in canvas coverage.

Kit includes:  Congress cloth, all threads and materials necessary to complete the project, instruction booklet and color photocopy

Student to bring:  Usual stitching supplies, light and/or magnification, if needed.

WINDOW IN PROVENCE
Class length:  Two days
Proficiency level:  Intermediate
Kit fee:  $79.00
Ground fabric:  White Congress cloth
Size:  6.25”x 4.5”

Window in Provence is a non-charted, pre-drawn design that will give the student a unique opportunity to try new and different techniques and materials.

This piece will be worked in three stages.  Stage One:  This will be to create the wall, window, shutters and the shadows.  The wall is created from pieces of Ultrasuede, which have been cut out and applied to the ground fabric in several pieces.  Lines will be drawn on the Ultrasuede to depict ‘cracks’ in the wall.  Variegated silk ribbons will be used for the bricks; shutters are made  by covering pieces of cardboard with fabric and then stitched to the Congress cloth ground.  Overstitching with pearl cotton and floss will create the slats and braces of the shutters.  The actual window will be covered with sheer fabrics, cut and applied to create glass and shadows on the windows, while the sashing will be couched in #5 pearl cotton.

Stage Two:  The tree will be created using novelty threads, pearl cottons, metallic threads and flosses that are couched down.  Students will use a tissue paper pattern over the piece to create the tree.

Stage Three:  Using a variety of silk ribbons, the flowers and leaves will come to life. The instructor will guide the students in making decisions as to the placement and color choices.

This lovely piece is a wonderful way to learn new and unusual techniques and stitches, along with creating depth, perspective and cast shadows.

Kit includes:  Pre-printed white Congress cloth, silk ribbon, Ultrasuede, floss, pearl cotton, Brazilian (rayon) thread, sheer and opaque fabrics, cardboard, nettings, novelty threads and beads.
