Class 101

Class 101
Jan Beaney and Jean Littlejohn

Transitions: Through Thick and Thin
Class length: Eight days
Proficiency level: All levels
Kit Fee: $80
Ground: N/A
Size: N/A

An experimental course exploring creative possibilities using fine and fragile fabrics through to richly textured robust surfaces. The aim would be to create a range of exquisite and structured surfaces using stitch and mixed media. This course is designed to inject innovative ideas that could inspire and be incorporated into personal styles and projects. It is hoped to introduce contemporary features to well loved disciplines giving a completely new look without destroying their heritage.

Part 1
The emphasis will be on fragility and will include free pulled work, linear lace, net appliqué and other lace techniques. All of these can be successfully worked by hand and or machine and include the addition of beads as appropriate.

Part 2
Initially, the focus will be on more vigorous surfaces, stitching in relief and creating cloth with stitch alone. The final challenge would be to select preferred elements from the experimental pieces in order to create resolved unique work.

Kit includes:  All background materials needed for the various techniques, such as loosely woven cloth, fine muslin, net, soluble film, cotton, some yarn, needles, reference and other appropriate bits and pieces.

Student to bring:  Jan and Jean will send a list of requirements with their student letter.

Class 104

Shady Colors
Class length: Four days
Proficiency level: Advanced Intermediate
Kit fee: $148
Ground: 18-ct mono canvas (three color choices)
Size: 8.5" x 8.5"

Shady Colors is not your ordinary geometric design. This class is an experiment in creating changes in value using complementary colors.  The class will have two elements:

1. You will have an intricate 8.5” x 8.5” star to stitch in your choice of three complementary color combinations, and
2. You will make a color study notebook focusing on the elements of color with particular emphasis on balancing and harmonizing with complements.

The star is made up of wonderful twisty string-art style stitches worked in multiple shades of Soie Cristale, Elegance, Impressions, and Kreinik braid with touches of Flair and Accentuate. Stitches such as the triangular Jessica, giant Amadeus, two-color Walneto, shaped crescents and even a double-fan-doubled will be fun and easy with clear step by step directions.

The color notebook will guide you through the basics of color theory and will provide a useful reference after class. A variety of quick cut and paste exercises will translate nicely into informed choices in all of your personal stitching.

Carole and Michael love to put colors and threads and stitches together, and they think you will find this class entertaining and educational.

Color choices:
1. Buttercream/violet (on buttercream canvas)
2. Forest/cranberry (on dark green canvas)
3. Azure/sunset (on light blue canvas)

Kit includes: 13” x 13” colored 18 ct. mono canvas, all threads needed to complete the project (threads provided in full skeins so that students can make color variations if desired), full size color photocopy of project, detailed instructions for project, materials for color study notebook including printed pages, Color-Aid papers, grey scale and template material and an extensive bibliography.

Student will supply: (for the stitched project) stretcher bars (we recommend Evertites™ but they aren’t required) and usual stitching supplies, and (for the notebook) pencil ruler, glue sticks, paper scissors, plus scraps of colored fabric and old magazines to share.

The Dragon's Tea Party
Class length: Four days
Proficiency level: Advanced Intermediate-Advanced
Kit fee: $185
Ground: White Congress cloth
Size: Overall 18" x 14", Design 13" x 10"

The Sun, Moon, Wizard, and the Castle Dragons have all come to realize that little girls really rule. Now our dragon has changed colors, and wing shape to be friendlier to the sweet little girl offering him a cup of tea.

He sits on a cushion and smiles, as our little girl pours a nice cup of tea. The girl’s hair can be any color you cose, as a variety of hair color choices will be offered in the classroom. Her dress is pale blue with an apron of sheer voile fabric with a trim of real lace from a flower painted teapot that matches the large cup held by the dragon.

Now our dragon has undergone a dramatic change from gold, silver, black or green. Being a magical dragon, he now chooses a delicate selection of rainbow colors that blend from head to tail and graduate up the wing. And his tail splay (not shown in the sketch above) is tied with silk ribbons. After all, he doesn’t want to offend his tiny hostess with dark and dismal colors and has ‘dressed’ appropriately for a tea party.

The background of a receding latticework frames the scene, and all threads to create our newest dragon are silk with a touch of sparkle. The little girl’s face is pre-painted a natural flesh tone, while the eye and lips can be enhanced a bit with some minor stitching. Included in the supplies will be a quality sheer fabric and ¼” cotton lace and silk ribbons. The dragon’s cushion is velvet.

Kit includes: Congress cloth, all threads and materials needed to complete the project, complete set of instructions and a color photocopy.

Student to bring: Stretcher bars, usual stitching supplies, light/magnifier, if needed

Class length: Four days
Proficiency level: Intermediate
Kit fee: $105
Ground fabric: 18-ct Lusty Lavender canvas
Size: Design 11" x 10", Finished 16" x 14"

Another color, color, color class! Students asked Marnie to do more, so here it is. Look at what color over color does. “When I received this beautiful new Lusty Lavender canvas,  I could hardly wait to begin!” says Marnie. Purple is regal and mysterious! It was Cleopatra’s favorite color.

Fifteen different patterns with one of them varied in several places. The bottom left pattern will be each individual’s initials -- that personal touch. (Note the M's for Marnie.)
Many beaded concepts will be covered. Lace and specially created lavender art paper with ribbon flowers.

Silks, overdyes, many different metallics and specially collected beads in many different colors of blue, lavender and gentle greens. The flower pots add that additional relaxed touch. There will also be a discussion about the color of purple and its history in class.

Kit includes:  Canvas, all threads, materials and beads,  complete set of instructions  and color photocopy.

Student to bring:  Stretcher bars 14”x 16”, embroidery needles #8 and usual stitching supplies.

The basket is woven with Sea Grass and a thin gold metallic thread used together in the needle to create the look of an elegant real basket. The top and bottom of the basket are created with an interesting braiding technique.

To Honor Elsa
Class length: Four days
Level of proficiency: Intermediate Advanced
Kit fee: $90
Ground: Twill linen
Size: Design 8" x 13", Finished 12" x 18"

Elsa Williams was Marnie’s mentor during the 1960's. Luckily, Marnie was fortunate enough to teach for Elsa’s needle art school in West Townsend, MA thru the 1970's, spending much quality time with her. This design is to honor that experience, as well as Elsa’s talent and ability to share her love of needle art across the world.

In the 70’s Marnie asked Elsa if she could take one of her designs and move beyond the use of only wool, adding silks. Elsa agreed and was very happy with the outcome. Thus, this design takes it one step further, adding metallics and beads.

The shapes, design and stitches used here are symbols of the beautiful designs of Elsa Williams. Glorious combined colors of pinks, rose, sky blue, periwinkle, lavender, varied greens and the sunny yellow butterfly are used for the stitches, such as varied buttonhole, satin, rows of chain, off-set crosses, fishbone, spiders web and raised chain and shading variations. All of these choices entertain and educate. And yes, the basket is shadowed.

Further, in class there will be discussion and information given about blocking needlework, especially fabric pieces, as well as transferring designs. “Elsa taught me lots, and I thank her. She made me the “Shady Lady” of shading -  one of the most rewarding of stitch techniques, “  says Marnie.

Kit includes:  Drawn design on linen, all threads and materials needed, complete set of instructions and color photocopy.

Student needs:  A 5” embroidery hoop, embroidery needles #3 thru 8 and usual stitching supplies

It is orange blossom time and the beautiful fragrance has attracted a hungry visitor. Soon the blossoms will be done and the fruit will take center stage. The ripe oranges will bring a little sunshine to the cold days of winter.  But for now, for a very short time, it is orange blossom time.

My goal when designing this ornament was to create an ornament that looked like a section of the tree. The shape of the ornament and the use of detached elements has accomplished this vision.

Learn the basic techniques for adding dimension to your embroidery while working on this gorgeous ornament. Class time will concentrate on the wired wings of the butterfly, the padded oranges, silk shading, and the finishing techniques.

Summer's Song
Class length:  Two days
Level of proficiency:  Beginning to Intermediate
Kit fee: $85
Ground: Congress cloth
Size:  Design 6" x 9", Stretcher bars 12" x 14"

Summertime and the meadow nods to the music in the breeze of a warm afternoon. The chicory flower is often seen as inspiration for the Romantic concept of the Blue Flower, which stands for desire, love and the metaphysical striving for the infinite and unreachable. It was also believed to be able to open locked doors, according to European folklore. Queen Anne's Lace is so called because the flower resembles lace; the red flower in the center represents a blood droplet where Queen Anne, wife of James I, pricked herself with a needle while making the lace.

Using the provided hand-painted Congress cloth, beads, silk and metal threads, we will create an elegant memory of summer. We will be using a new composite thread: Gilt Sylke Twist. Bead appliqué over Smyrna cross, couching and ribbon work with goldwork are the techniques used to create the focal points. Come delight in the warmth of a sultry day!

Kit includes: Congress cloth, all threads and materials needed to finish the project, complete set of instructions and color photocopy.

Students to bring: Stretcher bars (12”x 14”),  tacks, usual stitching supplies and light/magnifier, if needed
