“Adopt” Gandalf the Eastern Screech Owl
The Eastern screech owl is a small owl whose white, grey, and reddish-brown camouflage helps it blend into Eastern U.S. forests. They average only 7.5 inches in length and weigh a little more than a roll of pennies when they are fully grown. Oftentimes, these little birds are mistaken for bats when they hunt insects around lights. They are common in both urban and suburban areas and nest readily in nest boxes. Eastern screech owls come in three color morphs (or variation): a rufous (red) phase, a gray phase, or a mosaic of the two color phases.
