Homeschool Science Days at Callaway! – POSTPONED

Who: Homeschool students aged 5 – 14

What: 2019 – 2020 school year theme: Exploring Georgia’s Great Outdoors!

(Students will study a variety of topics related to biology, chemistry, geology, and ecology of Georgia’s environmental systems).

When: Third Tuesday of each month; 2:00 – 3:30 p.m.

  • January 21st
    • Topic: “Soils…Oh My!”
      • Come “Get the Dirt” on soil as we learn about how soil helps our gardens grow. We will discuss the properties of soil, how to amend your own soil, and how soil is formed.
  • February 18th
    • Topic: “The Life of a Pioneer”
      • Every wondered how pioneers lived? We will wonder through the historic Log Cabin, discuss kitchen gardening, and even learn and play some pioneer games.
  • March 17th
    • Topic: “Wonderful World of Butterflies”
      • Come experience the beauty of nature in the Cecil B. Day Butterfly Center as we discuss the butterfly life cycle, the floral resources that butterflies need, and how to create your own butterfly garden.
  • April 21st – THIS DAY IS POSTPONED
    • Topic: “Geology 101”
      • We will explore the wonderful world of rocks as we learn about, touch, and see the three different types of rocks and even see some of the native stones that can be found in our own landscape.
  • May 19th
    • Topic: “Wildlife of Georgia”
      • You will want to learn more about the native fauna you have in your own backyard. We will discuss the variety of wildlife that can be seen and the habitats that these wildlife need.

Where: Discovery Center, Callaway Gardens

Why: Callaway Gardens beautiful landscape provides the perfect outdoor classroom as students gain knowledge of scientific principles. These hands-on, interactive lessons provide an active learning environment for home schoolers!

Homeschool Programs


  • Group programs: Book a private program through our Education Department and experience a unique experience specifically tailored to the needs of your homeschool group. Educator-led hikes, animal encounters, and hands-on activities are just a few of the potential tools utilized during these active learning times.
  • Regular educational program offerings (on pages 4 – 7 of this document)


Pricing information

  • $6.50/student regardless of age
  • $10.00/adult (teacher, chaperone, or parent)
  • Guided programs carry an additional fee.
  • Check and credit card are the only accepted forms of payment.
