October Tennis Tips & Tricks

Tennis Tip from Jack

Jack’s Tennis Tip –

Communicating direction and the direction of your communication
In doubles communication is very important. Your partner needs to know what you are planning and you need to know what they want to do too. Your goals for communication should be very simple. State your objective, which might be one of the following: “I’ll poach on the first serve” or ‘I’m going to chip crosscourt” or “I am going to serve down the middle” etc. Your communication should be short and to the point like the following: “Bob just got hot, let’s hit everything to Bill” or “Watch out for the poacher.” Most of your communication should be about position, direction and aiming.
Your communication shouldn’t be about coaching your partner. Now instead of communicating about direction the direction of your communication has changed. You’re not speaking with your partner and peer anymore but you are communicating from a higher level DOWN to/at them. The direction of your communication has changed. Most partners don’t like being coached, be positive, communicate what you are attempting to do, let them tell YOU what they want to do. Don’t tell them what they should be doing. Communicate your shots direction but don’t direct your communication down to/at them.
As a coach I often am playing with my students and I try and remind them to do what we have been practicing. I might remind them to return and come in, I might remind them to use underspin when near the service line, I might remind them to use underspin on their volleys. I can and should do this as I am their coach and mentor. You should not do this as you are their partner and friend. As soon as the direction of your communication changes it changes the parameters of your team’s synergy. Remember to only communicate direction and be wary of the direction of your communication.
