2018 is the Year of the Butterfly! We are excited to celebrate the
30th Anniversary of the Cecil B. Day Butterfly Center
39 years ago, in 1979, Deen Day Sanders first approached then Callaway Gardens CEO, Harold Northrup, about adding a butterfly center to the already extraordinary list of features at the Gardens. Her late husband, Cecil B. Day, founder of Day’s Inn, recognized butterflies as the quintessential symbol of hope and salvation. Nine years later, in honor of Mr. Day, and thanks largely to the tireless effort and passion of Mrs. Sanders, the Cecil B. Day Butterfly Center opened September 25, 1988 as only the second and the largest butterfly exhibit in North America.
It immediately became the most visited attraction at Callaway Gardens and made headlines around the world.
7300 square feet – over 1000 panes of glass – world-famous artwork – state-of-the-art mechanical systems – and over 2000 stunning, tropical butterflies!
The Butterfly Center began as a marvel of innovation, technology, architecture, and beauty; and has become a hub of education, conservation, serenity, tradition, joy, and amazement!
This year, we celebrate the Day Butterfly Center’s 30th anniversary and give thanks to the more than 15 million visitors that have come to Callaway Resort & Gardens to experience the awe and wonder of butterflies at this spectacular exhibit.
