Cason Callaway’s Vision Brought to Life

Callaway Resort & Gardens’ golf pedigree stretches back more than six decades to 1949, when architect J.B. McGovern, with considerable input from Cason Callaway, designed the first nine holes of the Lake View Course. Completed and opened in 1951, Lake View perfectly captured Mr. Callaway’s vision that “playing golf should be a pleasant experience in beautiful surroundings.”

The Callaways understood the beauty and importance of golf. Mr. Callaway was on the founding Board of Trustees of the Georgia State Golf Association. Almost from the beginning, the Gardens served as a competition venue, with Jack Key of Columbus, Ga. winning Callaway’s first-ever tournament, the 1951 Men’s One-day Golf Tourney.

Cason Callaway’s son Howard H. “Bo” Callaway even had a prestigious golf tournament in mind when he conceived a water ski competition at Callaway Gardens in 1960. Wanting the new event to be as revered by water skiers as the Masters was by golfers, he requested and received permission from the Augusta National Golf Club to use their tournament’s name. Today, the Masters Water Ski & Wakeboard Tournament endures as one of the world’s most prestigious water sports events.

And year after year, groups of golfers return to the beautiful courses that the Callaway family created.

Quotes from PGA Tour pros who played here during the Buick Challenge:

“This is one of the 10 best golf courses we see all year.”  David Duval

“What a great course. What a beautiful place… If I had known the golf course was this good, I would have been here years ago.”  Fred Couples

“This course is a gem. What a beautiful piece of property… This is one of the best kept secrets in all of golf.”  Nick Price

“It is certainly one of the best courses we play all year… You walk into your villa, you have that kind of fireplace smell. You are laid up on the couch watching TV instead of lying with your head against the headboard of your bed like… every other week. It’s not like you’re home, but it’s closer to home than an average hotel. It’s fun.”  David Toms

“I’ve always liked this place a lot. I bring my family down here… It reminds me a lot of Pinehurst. It’s beautiful. I don’t know if anyone’s ever been to Callaway Gardens and didn’t like it.”  Steve Elkington

Are you ready to hit that elusive hole-in-one? Do you find yourself dreaming of getting out on the golf course and enjoying a fabulous golf weekend getaway near Atlanta? Luckily for you, there’s some spectacular golf courses in Georgia – especially at Callaway Resort and Gardens-- and these are the perfect places to show off your swing skills. Golfing can be a challenging yet rewarding sport to master, and it’s so worthwhile to give it your all while you take in a lovely day on the green. If you’re ready to perfect your golf swing before your next weekend getaway at the course, read on! [IMAGE 1] Keep Your Hands Down Low Everyday spent golfing is an adventure, especially when you’re still learning and looking to improve. Whether you’re a golf novice or a passionate player who’s just ready to get back in the swing of things, the first thing to remember is to keep your hands low. This is one surefire way to productively keep the height of your shots under control. By putting your hands in the proper position, you will be able to limit the height of your follow-through and the flight of the ball. This ends up giving you more control and accuracy, which will in turn hopefully help you get a better score. While some people may suggest choosing a stronger club, swinging lightly or moving the ball back in comparison to your stance, these steps are more difficult than just keeping your hands low as you finish. Just following this tip will bring the trajectory of your shots into more successful territory. Think About Posture Experts at the best golf resorts for a memorable golf weekend getaway would recommend giving your spine the forearm. What does this mean? Basically, this tip is telling you to prioritize your posture, keeping your right forearm parallel to your spine and your left wrist flat. Your elbows and arms should form a triangle, which will confirm your shoulders are rotating properly for the backswing. Professional golfers are all about posture, and if you want to step up your game, then you should take a good, hard look at your current posture. This could be the key to success you’ve been searching for. [IMAGE 2] Find Power in Your Body Golfers of all levels need to understand some fundamentals of the game, including that power is generated from the body rather than the arms. For beginners, it can be hard to fight the urge to concentrate your power on your arms and hands, but it’s important to try and learn how to power with the club. One helpful practice involves placing the club behind the ball, with your body at a standstill. Try to drag the ball into the air without a single backswing. Players who rely on their hands to control the club may struggle to start, but as you continue this exercise, you’ll realize how easy you can get the ball in the air by using just your core body strength. Once you have this down, you’ll be amazed at how you can turn fully through the ball during the downswing. Understanding this core essential sets you up for success on the golf course and off it as well. Put these tips to good use by booking your next golf game at Callaway Resort & Gardens today, and consider joining us for the 17th Annual Ida Cason Callaway Foundation Golf Tournament.
