“Adopt” Juniper the Great Horned Owl
When Juniper was a cute little baby owl she and her siblings lived in a nest high in a tree in Iowa. One night their nest was blown down in a strong thunderstorm. Juniper and her brother were found by a well-intentioned human who thought that the baby owls were abandoned. Instead of putting Juniper and her brother up on a branch the human took them home to raise them. Even though the human was trying to help Juniper, the opposite actually occurred because Juniper and her brother were never taught the necessary survival skills by their biological (owl) parents. This phenomenon is known as “imprinting.” Since she doesn’t know how to hunt on her own, or even how to hoot, unfortunately she can never be returned to the wild. Both Juniper and her brother, Cedar, were turned into the veterinary school at Iowa State University and were ultimately placed at Callaway Gardens. Juniper has been flying in shows since 2005.
